Sri Dhavala College was established in 1979 with the lofty ideal of providing meaningful and need based education to the youth of Moodbidri and surrounding areas. The college is managed by Sri Moodbidri Digambara Jain Vidyavardhaka Sangha ® which has a long tradition of over a century, serving the cause of education. Presently, it runs five educational institutions, from primary to degree level.
Prior to 1979 the Management had institutions providing education up to pre-university level only. However there was a persistent demand from the public to upgrade the PU College into a full-fledged degree college. The Management also had a great desire to start a first grade college in Moodbidri. Hence, under the able leadership of its President Padmavibhushana Dr.D.Veerendra Heggade, the Dharmadhikari of Sri Kshetra Dharmasthala, it took a bold decision to start a degree college from the academic year 1979-80. In this regard, the University Affiliation Committee from Mysore University visited the college on 7th May 1979. Consequently, with the approval of the university, the new college was formally inaugurated on 20th July 1979 by Dr.K.S. Hegde, the then Vice Chancellor of Mysore University.
The new college was named as Sri Dhavala College – Dhavala means bright or pure. It also represents the name of three sacred Jaina texts, Dhavala, Jaya Dhavala and Maha Dhavala. The original copies of these texts are preserved in the Jaina Mutt, Moodbidri.
Temporarily, the degree classes were conducted in the Jain PU College building. The Management had already acquired a site of 5.10 acres for the new college which was a benevolent donation of His Holiness Sri Charukeerthi Bhattaraka Swamiji of Sri Jain Mutt, Moodbidri. The foundation stone for the new building was laid in the divine presence of His Holiness Sri Sri 108 Yelacharya Muni Maharaj on 3rd March 1982 and it was completed in 1984. The new and spacious college building in the serene surroundings was inaugurated on 20th September 1985 by Sri Ramakrishna Hegde, the Chief Minister of Karnataka. A number of his cabinet colleagues were also present on that occasion.
From 1979, the college was affiliated to Mysore University. In 1982, when Mangalore University was established, it was affiliated to Mangalore University. The college received permanent affiliation in the academic year 1997-98. It is also recognized as a minority institution by the Government.
Initially, the entire expenditure of the college had to be met by the Management. In 1984 the college came under the grant-in-aid scheme of the Government of Karnataka and it got UGC recognition under section 2(f) of the UGC Act in 1995 and under section 12-B in 1998. The college celebrated Silver Jubilee in the year 2003-2004 and various building projects were initiated to meet the needs of increasing student strength and to provide more facilities. The college has received college development grant under various plans of the UGC. Building projects like new library, conversion of old library into conference hall, computer lab, staff room, ladies’ hostel, college canteen, audio visual room, four class rooms, additional wash room for girls, new wash room for boys were completed with the UGC grant, Management contribution and donations from the public. The college got accreditated with Grade ‘B’ by NAAC in 2004, reaccredited with CGPA of 2.43 in 2010 and reaccredited with CGPA of 2.22 in 2016.
In the beginning, the college offered B.A and B.COM. degree programmes. In response to the changing needs, B.C.A and B.B.M programmes were introduced in 2003 and 2006 respectively. To meet the increasing demand, additional batch of B.COM was started in 2012 and a new batch offering B.COM(Vocational) with computer applications was started in 2014.
